Tim Hortons Price "Hike"... Oh No, BOO HOO!

Ok, the title has some sarcasm in it if you hadn't noticed.

I have been seeing signs posted on all the Tim Hortons I frequent in Eastern Ontario for weeks now, so the price hike has been expected. On Monday morning prices did go up, $0.05 for a medium, $0.07 for a large, etc. It seems a lot of people are upset by this. Sure maybe they have a right to be, I mean... OH MY GOD! How will I be able to afford such an increase??
That seems to be the general reaction.
Some reactions posted on a CityTv article online: Five cents in the middle of the recession, come on,” and I’m a poor old pensioner,Are they for real? Over 5-7 cents???

I've also seen status updates on Facebook saying they won't be going there anymore.. Hmm, did they stop going the last time the prices increased, if so for how long?

With the cost of coffee beans and wheat on a rise, the prices of a cup of coffee and a donut need to rise as well. The minimum wage has been increasing slowly over the last few years also, which means companies are paying their employees more. In order for a business to keep it's profits going up they have to raise prices. Isn't it better to raise the price by a few pennies than to start laying off employees or closing stores? Eventually that's what would happen if Tim Hortons didn't keep up with expanding costs and wage increases. "Timmy's" has done a pretty good job at keeping their prices down. A few cents every year or two sounds fair to me.

What makes me rant is nobody is forcing you to buy at Tim Hortons. Home coffee machines were invented just for that reason. Oh but I should mention, tins of coffee prices have also risen drastically lately, but that wasn't on the news. Not too long ago I paid around $6 for a large tin of Maxwell House, now the (not on sale) price is around $10!

It all comes down to whether or not you WANT to pay not if you can afford to, because face it, if you can't afford 5-7 cents then realistically you can't afford the other $1.50. If you are that down and out you shouldn't be buying Tim Hortons coffee to begin with.

The easiest way to get out of paying the increased price is to bring your own travel mug. You save $0.10 on every refill, and you're helping to save the environment.

(Most cities do NOT recycle "Timmy's" paper cups...Straight from the Tim Hortons website: "Yes the cup can be recycled but it is not accepted for recycling everywhere at this time")

Or you could buy in bulk...

It's your choice... but to those regulars who say they won't get their morning coffee from Tim Hortons any longer, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!

  1. It's not even just Tim Hortons that raises their prices, it's everywhere obviously. But because they have almost a cult following, their followers tend to freak out for a while before just sucking it up and returning. They'll get over it.
